The fisherman cottages are an important part of Norwegian history. They used to serve as seasonal housing for the fishermen during the Lofoten Seasonal Fisheries. Housing for fishermen tended to be very rudimentary at the beginning of the 20th century, but today's fisherman cottages are upgraded to hotel - or even suite - standard.
