Sea safari to the bird island Runde

The most famous bird cliff in Norway!

Out in the ocean outside Herøy lies the bird island Runde. The bird nesting cliff is the southernmost in Norway and has the most species in Scandinavia.

The small island has about 150 inhabitants, but from February to August each year it is breeding season and more than 500 000 birds visits the island. About 100 000 puffin couples breed at the island, but you also find sea soles, storjo birds and cormorants in great numbers during breeding season.

The areas around Runde are vulnerable, important, and interesting for research. Runde is called the “island of treasures” after gold was found from the shipwreck of the Dutch ship “Ankerendam” from 1725.

The area is well suited for activities like scuba diving, fishing, and hikes. Go on an adventurous safari at sea and experience sea birds, sea eagle and seals. Bring your binoculars, and you will get even closer to the animal life.
